The most well-known TV office manager has now entered the film industry. David Brent - Life on the Road released in the year 2016. From the looks and vibes of it, he didn’t spent a lot of time and energy in the office, but since we will be discussing office spaces in this blog, which gives us a big excuse to buy a big box of popcorn, some other snacks and cold drink and settle in front of our screens to shunt the most iconic work places shown in the Hollywood films of yester years.
1) 9 to 5 - A classic from 1980s that showcased two extreme shades of women, friendship and revenge with big hair fights back against their sexist boss. In addition, the cheesy background score turned on the heat on the dance floors. Besides, BROWN was clearly the 'in' shading for office space when the film was shot.
2)Working Girl – Another classic from 80s wherein the story revolves around a humble office employee who is all set to fight against adversities, however this time the loathsome boss is a woman. The movie was an extraordinary interpretation of ‘Rags to Riches’ story and as in all great good stories, everybody gets their fair share of goodness. Confined, austere workplaces were the standard for most of the employees… however #spoileralert, our courageous woman ended up with a greater work area and her very own window.
3)The Wolf of Wall Street – Depicting the real life story, the film showcased the gluts of Wall Street in the late '80s; the corporate insatiability and strong power battles, which at last caused the Black Monday. The average office décor showcased in the film was darkened by all the business owners.
4)All the Presidents Men – Clique around the workplaces of the Washington Post, the film is a hyped story about the two journalists, Berstein and Woodward who reveal to the world, the Watergate scandal. As you'd expect in a bustling newsroom, the workplace design showcased in the film was cramped with no computer and desks full of papers.
5)The Apartment - What might you do to keep your boss happy? A classic from 60s, the Apartment film revolves around an ambitious office employee who attempts to curry support by loaning his condo to his bosses, so they can consummate their extra-marital affairs there. The dreary, standard office space designs were showcased that clearly depicted hero’s crave for promotion.
6)American Psycho - More trickeries from the gluts of Wall Street in the 1980s. The film is a dark comedy with widespread realism and jealousy over a business card releasesa serial killer’sfrenziedly desperate binge. Showcasing the financial aspects, workspace design was ahead of its time and was lustrous and ultra-modern.
7)Glengarry Glen Ross – Showcasing the real estate industry and its office environment, the story revolves around four real estate agents facing threats of redundancy and their fight for survival. With his award-winning performance of an office loser, Jack Lemon was the star of the film. Since, the film was depicting a failing company, the workspace design was a dull collection of metal file organizers shrouded in chaos.
8)Wall Street – Most people consider ‘Wall Street’ from 80s as the most iconic film about the Wall Street, which showcased and explained why ‘Greed is Good’. With his Oscar winning performance, Michael Douglas outperformed as Gordon Gekko. Since, the office was in the Wall Street, the workplaces had extravagant leathers and woods in its interiors.
9)Up in the Air – With no good amount of working showed in an office, which was most expected from the film. The film beings with a viewpoint of completing work proficiently and with as many air miles as possible, the film steadily presented the possibility that everybody onthe receiving end of joblessness raft is a real human being. The movie showcased office designs that were efficient and cruel, which was done deliberately to justify the leading character.
10)Office Space – Not so iconic and famous, but this film from 1999 produced and directed by King of the Hill, Butt-Head and Beavis was a cult classic. The film showcased the utilitarian and callous side of corporate culture and the ties that develop among colleagues. The work space setting was to a great extent grey and white, with no windows and a very few personal touches.
